1) Similar Documentaries
I have been watching this documentary which is similar to ours because it is about the obsession of radical islam. It is very interesting in how it portrays the islamics. It does tell us that it is only a select minority but this small majority of them are doing unspeakable things. This documentary goes on to talk about what makes these muslims want to join the radical groups.

In the documentary we see the people from VICE interviewing a cannibal. Cannibalism is something that is seen as just wrong in society, but no one wants to help them overcome their obsessions. This is an extreme example of obsessions but we intend to make people see that the people that have these obsessions don't see anything wrong with themselves. Whereas people that don't have these obsessions assume they are just weird. This documentary is similar to the one we plan to make as we intend to have a similar style. We want to shed light onto the topic that is unhealthy obsessions. In this documentary we see a lot of story telling from the cannibal. We are going to have a bit of this with our examples of obsessions; Eden and the car people.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTTIt4fjhzE          (Taboo: Obsession)
‘Taboo: Obsession’’ is a documentary which sheds light on a lot of crazy and disturbing obsessions that members of the public have and why they have them, in this documentary we see obsessions like A love affair with balloons, a fetish for female bodybuilders, and a snuggle up to a shrunken head in bed. Much like the VICE documentary, these obsessions are more of an extreme circumstance compared to our planned interviews with obsessions. However this documentary is similar to the one we plan to shoot, as it delves into the mental and psychological nature of obsession and OCD, which is what we feel is the most important in terms of research and content, ‘Taboo: Obsession’ however does focus on the actual obsession, of which we will be doing as well.

2) Primary Research
Obsession is where somebody is so dedicated to something that they dedicate a part of their lives to it. The things can be anything from celebrities to toys and everything inbetween.
3) Secondary Research
I have been researching into car clubs around the county. I came across two groups in particular one called Lincs modified and the other Max’d car club. I found that both of these clubs like to modify there cars ready to show off to other car enthusiasts. I found that the main attraction to this is for boasting rights and being able to say their car is better than someone else's  I will be talking to the main owner of the car club of Lincs modified and i will be seeing why they are part of the club.

I have been researching and gaining information involving the NHS and our local hospital, the Diana, Princess of Wales hospital. Of which i have been trying to contact about an interview with a neurologist and or a person who specialises in matters of the brain and /obsessive behaviour. In this interview we will be trying to avoid closed questions, as we try to get as much information as possible. To do this we will prepare questions in advance.

This website tells us about what exactly happens in the brain when people have obsessions. From this we have learnt that their are many causes for obsessions. Mostly it is a lack of chemicals in the brain or an increase in certain chemicals like serotonin. From this we have learnt a bit more about the Psychology of obsessions, however we are still in need of more explanations, in which I'm sure we will get while speaking to either Open Minds or the Psychology teacher.

5) Interview Techniques

I started to research things to do and not to do while interviewing people for a documentary. I found this website that had a list of the top ten interview tips. On this website we can see a lot of small things that we wouldn't have even thought about. Such as making sure the interviewee is comfortable in order to get more natural responses. From this I have learnt what to do and what not to do. Such as avoiding closed questions and preparing my question in advance. I also stumbled across a basic picture for interviews techniques. The picture gives us obvious tips for making sure it is a good interview. Overall the picture is saying that good mannerisms make a good interviewer and therefore we will follow these tips and hope to get the best interviews we can.

Referring to Lewis’s research about interview techniques and what to do during them, I have done some research into  what makes a good interview and things that develop and keep the interview under your control and keeps you able to get the answers you need/want, because even they may not know it, the interviewee may direct the question in a different way than what you would have wanted. These steps give you an idea of how to keep the interview under control.

UNIT 3: LO1 Grid (Resubmission)

What is the purpose of research?

The purpose of doing research is to anticipate and meet the audience’s needs, to understand the market and possible competition and to effectively plan ahead of production.

Type of research
Explanation
Examples
Advantages
Disadvantages
Primary

Primary Research is a collection of data done by the researcher, in this case us, it is usually done to gain some insight into the issue or topic that we are analysing.
Some advantages of Primary research include;
Primary research is usually more up to date and acute and also means that the researcher can focus on both Quantitative and Qualitative issues.
With Primary research you would usually get a low response rate to the questions and by the time that the research is finished, it may be out of date.
Secondary
Secondary Research is a summary of existing research rather than primary research, which is collected from experiments and the people you ask.

Secondary research is easily accessible compared to primary research, it will also alert the researcher to any potential problems. It is immediately available and it is inexpensive.
In terms of disadvantages however, it is frequently outdated and potentially unreliable. The information may not be applicable and the data may be difficult to obtain.
Qualitative
Qualitative research is research that requires a more in-depth response, it allows you to ask personal question and collect more data on people, this is best used in T.V shows when they get the personal response from viewers

An example Qualitative of research is from the programme supersize me, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2diPZOtty0&feature=related) in this clip 1.17 second into the clip he describes the effects of eating Mc Donald’s everyday with the camera man asking him question, I like prefer this way of presenting information because you understand what is being said and you could relate to the way he is feeling rather then it being displayed on a graph.
Qualitative of research is easily accessible, this is useful for companies who need to access the information easily and quickly, this works out well for the film industries when they ask people coming out of the cinema weather they thought the film was any good.

Several disadvantages of Qualitative of research is that the response given could be influenced by a third party and the authenticity and credibility is questionable, and the response could be bias towards the strong opinions of the person responding
Quantitative

Quantitative research is about asking people for their opinions in a structured way so that you can produce hard facts and statistics to guide you. To get reliable statistical results, it’s important to survey people in fairly large numbers and to make sure they are a representative sample of your target market.
In a Programme called Super size me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2Eo1fa7JBo) and 1.49 seconds into it there is an example of Quantitative research the graphs show how obesity has increased over the years. This is presented in a light hearted way, with colours to indicate which states are mostly affected in each year, I thought that the way in which the data was presented was helpful in making it easier to understand and keep the audience's interests, for example Learned that in Mississippi 25% of the people suffer from obesity.
Advantages of Quantitative research is that the results are easily analyzed and easy to compare against other data

A disadvantage of may be that the data would need regularly updating so this could lead into spending more money, for example a T.V show would need to do test each week to find out the amount of ratings they have and compare them with previous data collected to see if the popularity of the programme is increasing or decreasing, and depending on the ratings they receive would play a major part in determining the outcome of the show.
Market Research
The collection and analysis of information about the market within which the product will compete with other products for audience and revenue
A market research survey, which seems to be the most popular way of gaining information in market research.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eh_GybiVxxA
You can get consumers’ reactions to your documentary when it is still in production. This should enlighten any further development so it suits its intended audience.
Market research is primarily based on people’s opinions and views of a single product or service. The lack of members of the public may also be a negative factor for a company’s market research.
Audience Research
Audience research is defined as any communication research that is conducted  on specific audiences to gather information about their knowledge, interests, preferences, or behaviour. The audience could be based on various groups, such as race and ethnicity, age, education, or family income
Here is an example of audience research, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uRff-krdQgY

In terms of advantages, you would get to know and understand these people’s views on the matter that we are researching, if it were for our interviews, it would then be truthful as the person would most probably be on their own

There are obviously quite a few disadvantages of Audience research however, for example, the audience may not even want to do a interview with us and it is also quite time consuming to interview enough people that we would need.
Production Research
Production research focuses on the production of a product, in other words, how it’s made. The purpose of production research is to help companies to decide on a number of factors that will affect how they create their product. One of the factors that the company will have to research is how it would be best to show their product to their specific target audience.

The advantage can be the knowledge of how much everything is going to cost and where to get all the main resources from.

The disadvantages include that it is easy to over advertise where people will get bored of them.
What types of research will you conduct to help with your work?
Secondary Research will be one of the main types of research we will be going into, as we will be research and gaining information about OCD and obsessive behaviour.
What makes them the most effective for what you want to do?
It makes it the most effective research method for use, as we can easily search and  browse the NHS’s website or other websites to gain insights on OCD as as a result this will help us understand these problems and would make writing up questions much simpler.
How will it help you and how will it benefit your production?
As i had mentioned, it will benefit our production to do secondary research about OCD and other related mental health issues, as it would make speaking abou them much easier and also would improve the detail and relevance of the questions we write and ask the interviewee.

Production Schedule

PRODUCTION SCHEDULE
Name: Callum Snook, Lewis White and Daniel Evans
Title of Project: OCD and Obsession Documentary
Project final deadline: 27/05/2016

Work Required (explain why each element is required for production)
Who is responsible for this work?
Start date

When does it need doing by?
Printed and in Folder?
Completed on time?
Location Recce, A location recce is required as we need to be prepared for when we take the expensive equipment there.
We had split up the location recce and a lot of the Pre-Production between the three of us and we did the location recce for the locations that we had each organized.

Risk Assessment, the risk assessment is needed due to the problems and accidents that could happen during filming are pointed out and are clear for the crew to see and therefore halting some of the accidents or problems that could happen.
Again, we had split the risk assessment into three and each did a certain amount, according to the interviews or shooting we had each individually planned.

Shooting Script, the shooting script was needed as it put all of our ideas into a document and as a result would be easy to refer to and use when filming, but it is used to give our teacher and marker a sense of what we were planning and what our documentary will look like.
We each focused on the parts of the documentary that we either shot ourselves or planned and written up for filming, we did this because we had a lot of different interviews and we all couldn’t be there at the time so we did them individually,

Contingency Plan, the contingency plan, much like the risk assessment, is need to give us an overview of the problems that we could and will come across during production, be it pre production, post production or production itself.
Much like the shooting script, we all focused on our parts of the documentary on everything, we each did a section of the whole production, for example, I myself did ‘Post Production’

Research File, the research file is needed when making a documentary, especially ours as it is about medical illnesses and statistics around them, as a result research on this topic will be needed as we do not know enough to make a documentary based on mental health with our existing knowledge.
We attempted to add bits of research and information to each of our sections, but in the end we had decided to focus and gain information about our selected parts, for example i focused on researching OCD and the NHS and Public awareness around it.
