Proposal for LO3 Unit 27

Our subject for our Documentary is ‘Unhealthy Obsessions’ and obsessive behaviour. During this we will be attempting to understand what they are and why people have them. To do this we plan on getting interviews with professionals, like teachers, doctors and other companies that deal with people with these problems, followed up by people with these obsessions and backed up with the new information that we’ve learnt to draw a conclusion. We will use them all as examples of unhealthy and obsessive behaviour.
The style of our documentary will be Interactive/Reflexive and will draw upon influences from Louis Theroux type documentaries. This is because we are planning on having a presenter and also we want to show that we aren’t hiding the fact that we are making a documentary. The tendency of the documentary is ‘To analyse and or interrogate’. This is because we aim to talk to professionals and people who suffer from obsessions and learn what they are and why they become a thing.

Beginning-  Firstly, it will start with the information that we have researched, to give context and also to give the audience some idea what we are studying and analysing. We will then show the planned interview with the doctor/nurse from the Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital specialising in the effects and problems that can affect the brain. This will give us some crucial information on the subject, of which we can replicate throughout the documentary. After this we plan to have a person who has an unhealthy obsession and shows lots of signs of extremely obsessive behaviour. We have managed to find someone who obsesses over the popular pop band ‘One Direction’ to which they have agreed to do an interview and will let us explore their obsession.

Middle-  In the middle meanwhile, We have planned to have a psychology teacher from our college explain, much like the doctor, about the obsessions and what it can do to you as a person and what it does to your brains. Following this we will get some interviews with some car enthusiasts who spend a lot of money on some items for their cars and how that has developed into an obsession rather than a hobby.

End- For the last part of the documentary, we have been able to secure an interview from an employee at Open Minds. A company that specialises in helping those with a mental problem, be it obsessive behaviour, depression and OCD etc.. I feel that we would need to end on a serious note, to get our point across and solidify the message and information about Obsessive Behaviour and Unhealthy Behaviour.

Legal and Ethical Problems;
We can run to some Legal problems if we plan on filming some scenes at the Hospital, as it is a public place we’d need to notify people in the area that we are filming and whether or not they would be liked to be filmed. We would need to get several release forms for this matter. Also accuracy is a problem, because we are using statistic and information based on actual health problems, if it were to be false it would be seen as unethical.

Interview with Eden and friend.

7 Isaacs Hill, Cleethorpes. We have permission to film in this property from Eden’s Mother (Tracey Pearce, 07725359161).
Pro’s:
  • It’s actually where she lives so we can see the material side of her obsessions. Such as the photos and books etc.
  • It’s a short walk from my house which the camera equipment will be at, so there is no problem with transporting the equipment.
  • We will be filming inside the property so we don't have to worry about such things like environmental damage and people getting in our way etc.
Con’s:
  • She has pets and siblings so we might get audio interference. We will do our best to prevent this.
  • The room in which we intend to film is is small so we will have to work around the space we have.
We intend to film on the 22nd of April 2016. We have arranged this with both Eden and her friend, plus we have arranged it with Eden’s mother.
Since I will be going from my house and I only live around the corner we will be walking from my house. It will take about 13 minutes.
On the day the weather is supposed to be good. We will take the equipment in the bags anyway, so even if the weather takes a turn for the worst then the equipment will still be safe.

For the car part of the documentary i will be going to cadwell park. They are hosting a car show called Modified Live

This is a sky view of the park. It is a good choice to use this as my main location because it has a lot of people there and a lot of cars so i will be able to get some interviews

Cadwell Park Circuit
Louth,
Lincolnshire LN11 9SE
Tel: 01507 343248
Fax: 01507 343519

Pro:
We will get lots of good interviews
We will get good shots of the cars and event
It is hosting an event that fits my theme perfectly so i won’t have to try and gather people to film as they will all be there.
It has a lot of like minded people there so it won’t be hard to get an interview.
Con:
It costs £17 per person and i will need to bring at least one other person along to help hold the boom pole and other equipment which will bring my total to £34.
There is a lot of people and some will not want to be filmed so i might have to blur faces out.
If it is raining the event will be called off which means i won’t be able to get the shots i need.

I intend to film on the 24th April 2016.
The weather is meant to be sunny on that day but it does say a couple of light showers  which means the event should still take place.

Interview with Open Minds!

7-9 Osborne St, Grimsby, South Humberside DN31 1EY

01472 625100
Navigocare.co.uk

Pro’s for filming:
  • They are a professional and well connected, government funded mental health branch, so we will have access to people who are learned in this topic and subject

  • Because this is a professional environment, they would understand the seriousness and maturity that would  be needed when speaking and discussing this topic and as such it would be easy and quicker for us to complete and get a great outcome through it.

Con’s for filming:
  • The company is situated in a busy shopping related area and as such it would be difficult to get a lot of cut aways and other footage around the location
  • Due to the amount of people around the area, we would also need to a lot more watchful and wary of our equipment, as it could be easily broken, damaged or stolen.
  • It is quite far from the college and as a result we would have to travel with the equipment to this location which is roughly a 30-45 minute walk.

We planned to do the interview here a while back, on Monday 11th of April. But after delayed e-mails and plans, we had to arrange it for this Tuesday, the 3rd of April. We need to finish up this filming as it is dangerously close to the deadline and we would need  to edit it as well.
2016-04-29.png

As you can see, the weather on Tuesday 3rd will be a mixture of cloudy and light showers, so it would be crucial to bring an umbrella or other materials to help protect our equipment from the hazardous conditions, while filming cut aways and others.

Risk Assessment for LO3 Unit 27

DAN - BLUE
CALLUM - PURPLE
LEWIS - RED

Risk Assessment

Activity
Hazard
Level of Risk
Control Measures
Filming at the car show
Scratching people's car, damaging equipment
medium
Make sure when we are filming we have a safe space so that we don't break anything
Equipment at the show
The equipment could get broken or could be stolen by a passer by
Medium
Make sure we keep the equipment with us at all times plus to be careful where we choose to film
Passers by
We could potentially film a passer by without their consent and they could legally sue us for it
Medium high
Make sure we print off posters to let people around us know that we are filming so if they don't want to be in the documentary they can avoid the cameras
The interviews
We could also be sued if we don't make the people being interviewed sign a form stating that we got their consent to film them
high
Make sure we go equipped with a hand full of forms and make sure they sign it before shooting
Filming the peoples cars
Potentially we could break something or scratch something. We also could show something they don't want us too
low
Make sure that we take care whilst recording the private interviews
Transporting the equipment
We could break the equipment whilst driving to the venue and also while driving home
low
Make sure that we keep the equipment in a protective case until it is time to film
time lapse
The equipment could get stolen or damaged by passers by
medium
Make sure we stand with the camera at all times so that people know it's there
Rain
It could rain and break the equipment
low
Make sure we have an umbrella or some sort of rain protector for the equipment

Filming for Open Minds

Filming outside for cut aways.
While filming the scenes outside, we could run into risks with traffic, the public. Some members of the public could prove problematic and may damage our equipment.
Low
We should, to prevent this, stay with our equipment at all times and have all of us around when doing so, also we should be fully aware of what is happening in our surroundings as to not cause any accidents.

Rain and other weather conditions.
Again, as we are filming outside for parts, we would need to take under consideration the weather, as rain and other such conditions can damage the equipment.
Low
It is Summer now, so the weather is a bit kinder and warmer, so rain isn’t a regular occurrence but you can never count out the fact that it isn’t going to rain, so to prevent any problems happening with the equipment, we should bring an umbrella just in case.
Eden and Friends Interview

Filming upstairs (Eden’s Room)
Dropping equipment/falling down the stairs
medium
We will be extra careful with the equipment on the stairs
Spillage
Spilling drinks near/on the camera equipment
low
We will make sure that their is no food/drink near the equipment to make sure no one can knock it over.
Transporting the equipment
Moving the equipment from college all the way to Isaacs Hill in cleethorpes.
medium
We will arrange transport in order to get it there efficiently and

Contingency Plan for Unit 27 LO3

Contingency Plan
Dan
Lewis
Callum

Name: Daniel, Lewis and Callum
Title of project: Documentary on Obsession
Potential problem
Troubleshooting methods
Pre Production
Disagreement with group
Work past it as soon as possible. If it's a decision, get someone not in the group's opinion. Or make surveys
Thinking unrealistically
Ground the ideas and list all available resources and consider all individuals skills.
Unfair work distribution
Simply re distribute workload fairly again, taking into consideration people's skill sets.
We don't do enough research into our theme
Make sure that everyone is doing their part and is keeping up to date
We can't get an interviewee
We will have to re think our theme and see which one will work the best for us
Production
Passers by
We need to make sure that we let everyone around the select location know that we are filming
Clothes
Make sure that the person that we interview hasn’t got anything offensive on their cloths otherwise it will make the interview unusable
Weather
Checking weather sources days before and be available for other days to interview people
Post-Production
Editing too complex
Make sure that we don't overcomplicate the editing together, as a result we will be editing on different machines and then combining them onto one MAC and then rendering it toe
Continuity Errors
Re-shoots may be needed,If we don’t get the footage we need. We may also have to schedule another interview if we don't have enough footage.
Audio/Visual cuts
Constantly reviewing the production after every couple of changes. Make sure that when we are filming the tascam doesn’t malfunction

this will split the time of having nothing being said to keep the viewr interested
08:00

08:10
finish with a fade as i sweep over the event to a transition back to the next part of our documentary
this will make our documentary look professional and will be achived by using some ladders.
00:00
00:00
i will be getting a third interview as back up incase one of my interviews doesnt go very well
this will help with the documentary as i will be able to pick the best interview or make it longer and add all three in.
8:00-
8:10
A quick insight into what we planned to do at Open Minds and what their company is all about, a summary in other words. Close up of us explaining the content and what Open Minds do.
This will help the audience understand what Open Minds is, who they are and why we are interviewing them, rather than just jumping into the interview. We may possibly do this bit during the establishing shots.
8:10-
8:15
We will then get footage of us entering Open Minds. Mixture of Long, mid and pan shots combined with close ups and POV’s
Doing this will hep set the scene of our interview and where we went to get it.
8:15-
8:20
To follow the previous shot, we will then get some close ups and long shots outside the location to use as cut aways and establishing shots.
As mentioned before, doing this would provide the audience some context of where the interview took place.
8:20-
8:30
To pair the previous shots outside the company, we would then like to film a varity of different shots inside, to also ‘establish’ and give the watcher aview into the company itself. Much like the previous shots but with the exclusion of long shots.
‘’                  ‘’
8:30-
8:40
After that, we would then film a POV shot of either one of us shaking the staff member being interviewed and then cut to the interview itself. Possibly the POV maybe replaced with another shot, like over the shoulder or MID shot instead.
Doing this allows us to give context on who we are interviewing, their name etc.. rather than just going straight into the interview without first introducing them to the audience. We are planning to do a voice over during this scene, in which we will speak abou twho they are.
8:40-??
Depending on how long the interview is, we will be doing a continious shot and will keep the camera rolling while the camera is faced on the person being interview, whislt being placed at an angle in which you can still see us somewhat. We will do this in mid shot as it would fit best for an interview.
Being a continious shot makes it easier to edit and also takes away the nessesity of changing camera angles during the interview which would seem quite disrespectful to the interviewee.
??-??
Because we do not know how long the interview will last, it is hard to guess the timings, but however after the interview, we wil show statistics and existing videos, supporting what the person interviewed as mentioned as this would give the audience some infomation and would educate them more in this subject.
The use of existing videos and statistics will help back up what has been mnentioned during the interview, it would also, as i have mentioned earlier, help the audience understand and learn about our topic.

We have planned to do another interview with a psychology teacher, as it would balance our professional advice and information with the actual people with obsessions etc.. So when we get more infomation on this interview, we would then be in a position to record how we are going to shoot it, although it will have to be definitely during this coming week, due to deadlines.
This part of the shooting script will be added after we can sort and arrange filming, if we can agree on times, dates etc..
Approx.
MAGGIE WINTER INTERVIEW

9:45:
10:00
Before we show the interview and the interviewee, We had thought about placing a section of us explaining why we decided to interview Maggie and what the context and relevance of this is to our documentary.
This part would be shot after the documentary in the studio, as then we would have acesss to the green screen which would be benifical.
10:00-
14:42
MS- This interview, as we have planned anyway, will be all one shot with me and my partners feeing questions to the interviewee, because we are all keeping it in one shot, it will be much easier to edit and it makes the person we are interviewing feel much more at ease, due to the fact that they don’t need to worry about messing up, i.e stuttering and need the question repeating to them. Ideally we would want a multi camera production, but because of the time constraints in the deadline week, it wouldn’t be possible to get more than one for shooting and as a result we will need to make due with the equipment that we can get.
As mentioned in the adjacent column, we feel that shooting the interview all in one take would ease the editing process and would put less pressure and stress on the person being interviewed, plus it would be quite difficult to get more than one camera so we will have to make due with what we can get at such short notice.
14:43:
15:00
Just as we did before the interview with Maggie, we have intended to place a section at the end of all the interviews of me and my partners thanking each person that took the time to help us make this documentary.
Again, this would be shot afterwards and we can use this time and shot to use as a sign out and also a thank you.
